Pubbet Magic 101 – Episode 4: Introduction to Lip Sync

Hey puppetry fans, James here - the founder of Pubbets. In Episode 4 Brian dives into the essentials of puppet lip sync, one of the very first things your audience will notice if it’s off. In this post I’ll share a bit more context, point out common pitfalls, and give you extra drills to nail every syllable.

Why Lip Sync Matters

Good lip sync is the secret sauce that turns a puppet from “cute toy” into “living character.” When your puppet’s mouth movements match speech naturally, viewers suspend disbelief and connect more deeply with your performance. If lip sync is off - even by a fraction... the illusion breaks and your audience will notice before anything else.

Common Lip Sync Pitfalls

  • Word-by-Word Chatter: Opening and closing on every word makes speech choppy and unnatural.
  • Syllable “Biting”: Closing your puppet’s mouth too soon (or too late) on a syllable ruins timing.
  • Thumb-Only Jerk: Relying on thumb movement alone cramps your hand and gives a staccato effect.
  • Head Flapping: If your puppet’s entire head bounces with each mouth movement, it looks over-dramatic and distracts from the speech.

Pro Tips for Smooth Sync

  • Open on Syllables: Practice opening and closing exactly on each syllable  “el-e-phant,” “hun-gry,” “ad-ven-ture.”
  • Use Your Wrist: Let your wrist do the work, giving both top and bottom jaw equal movement for a fluid look.
  • Keep Posture Strong: Keep your puppet upright and steady - no pitching forward or backward with each syllable.
  • Record & Review: Film yourself on your phone, then watch in slow motion to spot timing hiccups and smooth them out.

Bonus Practice Drills

  • Syllable Counting: Grab a short poem or song lyric, mark each syllable with your finger, and practice mouth movements to match.
  • Mirror Monologue: Deliver a favorite movie line or monologue in front of a mirror- focus on jaw alignment and natural timing.
  • Speed Variations: Read the same sentence at three different speeds (slow, normal, fast) and adjust your mouth timing accordingly.
